“I was a bookkeeping student at high school and enjoyed the challenge of making the puzzle of debits and credits fit together to the Trial Balance stage. These years as a young teenager gave me a strong basis of understanding that I built on during my career in accounting.
After an interval of some years I returned to school in my early 20’s to further my study in accounting. Gaining great success in that class I went on to University to do part of a Degree in accounting. I started to work as a self employed bookkeeper for sole traders and small businesses – My “shoe box period” I call it now as most of my clients did just that, kept the paperwork in a box or a plastic shopping bag and brought it along to me to put together. At that point I hand wrote everything into a general ledger book, the computer, accounting programs and Excel have made things so much easier.
At 30 I decided on a complete change and went to Waikato University to complete a Bachelor of Social Sciences majoring in Women’s Studies. I enjoyed this immensely; it broadened my mind and world perspective. While at university I worked in the hospitality industry in small restaurants and bars as bookkeeper and payroll officer. After completing my degree I moved to Auckland where I worked in a manufacturing business as a bookkeeper, working my way up to office manager. I did the day to day book work, payroll, scheduling of work through the factory, pricing of the jobs and customer service as well as cash-flow forecasts and budgeting and working with the accountant to prepare the month end adjustments.
Since moving to Alice Springs I have worked in the car hire trade and in Aboriginal Community accounting before going into business for myself. I take all these skills and experiences into my work and aim to bring a level of professional bookkeeping into the small business community of Alice Springs. |
